Would you like to be able to identify more bird sounds? This resource is a treasure! http://www.audubon.org/bird-guide
I heard the strangest bird sound down by the river. It sounded like an underwater bird. I now think it was a bittern.

Flora: Ferns are so cool because they are a spore plant. They are seedless. I like to find out where and how they carry their spores. They release spores from tiny sacks called "sporangia"(National Audubon Society Field Guide to New England, 1998). This almost sounds Italian...if only it was, sporangina. "Yum! I love sporangina! It's such a lovely cake to have with coffee."

Sporagia of this fern (I believe it is the Ostrich Fern) begin plump, juicy little green replicas of the frond, then deepen in color and develop the coral and brown dusty spores.
I remember I used to see spores on the undersides of ferns, in a pattern like a salamander's back, but it's been years since I have seen one. I often flip over fern leaves to find them again.
And bunch berries. The white petals, I learned recently, are not petals at all. They are bracts, or modified leaves. I believe the petals of trillium are as well. The true flowers are in the center.
One of the gems in my town, Grindstone Pond. Sun on any body of water gives a shot of bliss. Always.

Flowers: True Forget-Me-Not
Little boy with bright orange and yellow fishing rod, accompanied by his dad. Off to catch something. When John asked the little boy, "Did you remember your secret super tackle?" The boy grinned and proudly rattled his lunch-box sized tackle box. Best of luck!

Tomatoes give feelings of promise and hope. Oregon Spring, Hog Head, Big Beef, Juliette, Amish Paste, are a few of the names. And husk cherries and many new pepper varieties.
Home. Kingfield, Maine.
John helped plant our garden for the first time. There was something so wonderful about working one row apart, planting seedlings across from one another, talking and dreaming while our hands worked the dirt. And the shared pride and satisfaction.
Your blessed to be out of reach of the crazies from the city. Is there snow on Bigelow, or the Loaf?
ReplyDeleteThank you for reading and commenting, George! There does not appear to be any snow left on any of the Bigelows or the Loaf.
